How to Make Matching Profile Pictures Across Every Platform

One recognisable picture, shown as a circle everywhere, makes you easy to spot across apps. Make it once at the largest size any platform asks for, keep it circle-safe, then export each platform's exact size.

A headshot on a plain background or a simple logo mark. Busy photos stop being recognisable at avatar size.
  1. Start from one picture. A headshot on a plain background or a simple logo mark. Busy photos stop being recognisable at avatar size.
  2. Make it at 800×800. The largest profile picture a major platform asks for is 800×800 (YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest). A sharp 800×800 square scales down cleanly to every smaller size: 512 for Discord, 400 for X, LinkedIn and Bluesky, 320 for Instagram, Facebook and Threads, 256 for Twitch.
  3. Keep it circle-safe. Every platform below shows the picture as a circle, which hides the corners. Center the subject and leave a margin all round.
  4. Export each size. In the free resizer, add your photo once, then pick each platform and its profile picture size. Your photo carries over between platforms, so each one is a quick frame and download.
  5. Change them together. When you update your picture, update every platform the same day so an old one is not still showing somewhere.

All twelve are uploaded square and shown as a circle. Sorted from largest to smallest, so you can see why one 800×800 original covers the rest.

Why one file looks different on each app

Each app shrinks the picture to its own display size and compresses it its own way, so the same file can look crisp on one and soft on another. Exporting each platform's size from one sharp original gives every app a clean starting point instead of a copy of a copy.

Display sizes are far smaller than upload sizes. TikTok shows its profile picture at around 200 px and Pinterest at around 165 px, even though both accept 800×800. Designing for the small view, one subject and strong contrast, is what keeps the set recognisable.

FAQ

How do I keep my profile picture consistent everywhere?

Use one picture, make it at 800×800, and export it at each platform's exact size with the subject centered for the circle crop.

What is the best profile picture size for all platforms?

Make the original at 800×800 px. It is the largest size any major platform asks for and scales down cleanly to the 512, 400, 320 and 256 px sizes the others use.

Why do my avatars look different on each app?

Each platform uses a different size and compression. Export each platform's own size from one sharp original instead of reusing one file everywhere.

Do profile pictures have to be square?

Upload a square. Every platform listed here displays it as a circle, so the corners are never seen.
