Social Media Safe Zones Explained (Stop Getting Cropped)

A safe zone is the part of an image no platform covers or crops, on any screen. It is different for every surface: a Story loses its top and bottom to the app's buttons, a banner loses its lower left to your profile photo, a YouTube banner keeps only a center strip.

Stories hide the top and bottom under the app's controls, banners hide a corner under your profile photo, and some covers lose their sides on phones. The table below lists each surface.
  1. Know what each surface hides. Stories hide the top and bottom under the app's controls, banners hide a corner under your profile photo, and some covers lose their sides on phones. The table below lists each surface.
  2. Keep faces and words inside. Put anything that has to be seen in the area nothing covers: usually the middle, sometimes right of center.
  3. Let the edges be background. Use the covered and cropped areas for color, sky or texture that can disappear without changing the message.
  4. Check before you download. The free maker draws what each platform covers over your image as a preview. The overlay is never part of the download.
  5. Design one vertical image for three apps. Instagram Stories, TikTok and Snapchat share 1080×1920. The area all three leave clear runs from about 13% to 80% of the height, away from the right edge.

What covers each surface

These are the areas the free maker marks on each surface. Everything else on the image is safe.

The YouTube banner, in numbers

YouTube's help pages give the banner's safe area as 1235×338 px on their 2048×1152 minimum. Scaled to the recommended 2560×1440 canvas, that is 1546×423 px in the exact center: about 60% of the width and 29% of the height. Computers show a full-width strip of that height, phones show only the center box, and TVs show the whole image. The file can be up to 6 MB.

One vertical image for Stories, TikTok and Snapchat

All three use 1080×1920 (9:16), and each covers a different part. Instagram puts its name and close button over about the top 13% and its reply bar over the bottom 14%. TikTok puts its tabs over the top 10%, its buttons down the right edge and its caption and sound over the bottom 20%. Snapchat covers about the top 10% and bottom 12%. Text placed between roughly 13% and 80% of the height, away from the right edge, clears all three.

FAQ

What is a safe zone?

The part of an image a platform never covers or crops, on any device. Keep faces, logos and words inside it.

What is the YouTube banner safe zone?

1546×423 px in the center of the 2560×1440 banner. YouTube gives it as 1235×338 on its 2048×1152 minimum, the same area scaled down.

Where is the safe zone on an Instagram Story?

Between roughly the top 13% and the bottom 14% of the 1080×1920 frame, where the name, close button and reply bar sit.

Why does Instagram trim the sides of my posts on my profile?

The profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles. A square post loses an eighth from each side in the grid; a 4:5 portrait post loses only a thin sliver.

What part of a TikTok video is covered?

The top ~10% (tabs), a column of buttons down the right edge, and the bottom ~20% (caption and sound).
